About Kate

Welcome to Puppy Training 101. Before we get started, grab yourself a coffee and a doggie treat for your best friend, and let’s get to know each other.

I always thought of myself as a cat person until I met Finbar–a chocolate brown Labrador with a crazy personality and a never ending desire to eat anything he could find. That day, over twenty-five years ago, he bounded towards me his tongue lolling to one side and his gangly legs refusing to go in the direction he wanted…and I fell in love.

To be honest, I had never before understood the phrase ‘mans’s best friend’, but after only a few short month’s of Finbar joining our family, I realized a dog is a woman’s best friend too.

When I first carried this little whirlwind of chocolate mischief into my home, I didn’t have a clue what to expect or how to train him. Very soon I was surrounded by chewed clothing, disappearing shoes, bite marks in the skirting boards and a kitchen floor that needed a deep clean and resealing.

I tried telling him off…he looked at me with doleful eyes and I caved in.

I tried giving him treats…he ate them and still carried on.

I tried to ignore his husband gave me an ultimatum–train him or get rid of him.

And that’s where my journey began.

Since Finbar, I have had a number of puppies and dogs walk into my home (my friend is a veterinarian and he gives me all those he can’t re home) and each one has needed training or behavioral adjustment. It’s often been a struggle to find the best way to train them. It’s been a labor of love, tremendously satisfying and totally worth it.

Dogs love to please and training a puppy is easy…once you know how!

There were no puppy classes when I first got Finbar and my training efforts came from trial and error, a book from the library and watching re-runs of the Cesar Milan show on YouTube. I got there in the end, but it was a long process. So, the purpose of this site is to give you the tools you need all in one place, to take your puppy through basic training; understand your dog’s behavior; and get the most out of your friendship with your best friend.
